A Look at Edgware
Edgware is steeped in history; it was originally an ancient parish with a manor, dating back to the 13th century, and became a stop-over for pilgrims travelling from St Albans to London. In the 16th century, traders took advantage of this passing trade, and Edgware later was established as a market town. It saw a small population growth in the 19th century, but fortunes changed in the 1920s. It was then that Edgware saw a massive growth spurt as the population grew from 1,500 to 20,000, in just four decades. This was partly down to the completion of the extension of the Northern Line, which turned Edgware into a London suburb. Over the 20th century and into the 21st century, more shops and homes were built in the area.
Its historic past is still very much in evidence, however, demonstrated by the number of attractive older buildings in the area. These include shops with beamed interiors, some the oldest of which date from the 16th century. By the 1930s, much of the housing was in built in a mock Tudor-style and was sold for a premium at the time. Edgware has expanded even further in recent years, with the construction of various houses and contemporary apartments.
Today Edgware is known as a residential area and shopping destination. The Broadwalk covered shopping centre and the older shops in nearby Station Road are well frequented by locals, and the district has a wide range of restaurants offering many different types of cuisine. It also benefits from excellent transport links, as commuters can use the Northern Line from Edgware and Burnt Oak Tube Stations, or take the Jubilee Line at Canons Park.
The district’s largest claim to fame, however, is that the 18th century composer Handel lived in the area for a brief period and used the St Lawrence Church organ. One of his patrons built nearby Canons Park mansion, although only the pillars marking the entrance to the former drive still remain.
A Growing Community
Edgware is a popular area for new building developments, with modern apartments being built on Green Lane and on the High Street. Work is still underway to turn the old White Lion Football Ground into an estate with nearly 200 homes. It all shows that there is no sign of the population dwindling over the coming years, as the area remains attractive to both to families and young, single people.
It is a fairly affluent area with a high level of managers, directors and professionals. A significant number of the population is educated to a high skill level, which is attractive to employers who might want to set up in the area. People living here also travel into the city of London to work, or into other nearby boroughs.
Community facilities in the area include Edgware Community Hospital and a number of schools. One of the best known is the North London Collegiate School, a leading independent girls’ school on the site of the former Canons Park mansion. The school has an important history, and when it was founded, it was regarded as the first UK girls’ school to offer pupils the same learning prospects as boys.
