A Look at Potters Bar
Situated less than 20 miles from the capital, Potters Bar falls within the London commuter belt. It is within easy reach of Enfield, St Albans, Hatfield, and Borehamwood and has very good road and rail transport links to London and further afield. It is close to the A1000 and M25, and the railway station has links to Moorgate and Kings Cross stations in London; train services also run to York, Peterborough and Cambridge. In addition, you can also reach London via the underground at nearby Cockfosters on the Piccadilly Line, and at High Barnet on the Northern Line.
It is an area that has seen considerable population growth. From the 1940s to the 1970s, the population increased by more than 10,000 to 24,600, although the population has seen a dip in recent years and now stands at around 21,600.
Potters Bar is an affluent area with high levels of home ownership, and house prices continue to rise. Most people are in the middle income or professional bracket. As it is considered an attractive place to live within the London commuter belt, the population is projected to increase over the coming years.
Another reason for its popularity is that the area benefits from a number of cultural and leisure facilities. Along with a swimming pool, scuba-diving centre, cricket club, tennis club and a golf course, another entertainment facility is the Wyllyotts Centre, which includes a theatre, cinema and museum. Top Hat Stage School is a performing arts school based in the community centre.
Business and Employment
Around half of Potters Bar residents travel into London to work, and a fifth of residents work in other areas of the county, such as Welwyn Hatfield; but there are also some major employers based in the immediate area. This includes Insurance firm Canada Life which has its UK HQ in Potters Bar. It employs hundreds of people and the UK branch provides insurance coverage for around three million people.
A number of companies are also based at the Cranborne industrial estate, a modern warehouse unit on Cranborne Road. Among them are Harman International Industries, who design and manufacture hi-fi audio products, TSG Building Services, who install plumbing, heating and air conditioning system, and Therapy Equipment Limited, who supply suction, oxygen therapy and rail equipment.
The South Mimms Service station off Junction 23 on the A1 is another source of employment and has several food outlets, such as KFC and Burger King, a Waitrose, fuel station and a Days Inn Hotel. Another big employer is the Royal Veterinary College Hawkshead campus which lies close to Potters Bar. It is one of the world’s top-ranked colleges of its type and many of its students live in the town. It provides undergraduate and post-graduate services, cutting edge research and vet services.
